Direct Instruction (DI) is a model for teaching that emphasizes well-developed and carefully planned lessons designed around small learning increments and clearly defined and prescribed teaching tasks. It is based on the theory that clear instruction eliminating misinterpretations can greatly improve and accelerate learning. (National Institute for Direct Instruction, 2022) Lessons are fast-paced and emphasize active student responding.

Precision teaching is a monitoring, practice, and decision-making technology for improving performance of any kind. (Johnson & Street, 2014) Academic coaching sessions focus on practicing skills to fluency and using the Standard Celeration Chart to track acceleration of correct responses and deceleration of incorrect responses. Learners of all ages participate in making data-based decisions about their own learning. This technology allows for accelerating learning outcomes where many learners can make a year’s growth in 40 hours of instruction.

Assent-Based Learning (ABL) is a system based on monitoring the learner’s willing participation in all activities within their sessions. This involves building programs around what motivates the learner and teaching advocacy skills so they can communicate their needs (ex. asking for help, asking to do something a different way, asking for a break, etc.). ABL creates a compassionate space for learners to close skill gaps in areas in which they have struggled previously.
